The Merchants of Haliburton : Downtown Memories.......
Object Number:
989.10.5
The Story:
This Highland Street view, circa 1920s, showing an unpaved road and scarcity of motor vehicles (despite the presence of curbside gas pumps) attests to a slower paced Haliburton than today. Most photographers focused on the North side of the street with its Grand Central Hotel, arguably the most elaborate building in the downtown core, as shown at the Left. This view, however, also includes some excellent detail of the W.R. Curry & Son garage and its British-American Peerless gas pump on the South side at the Right. Note that while Curry's was the local Chevrolet-Oldsmobile agent, they also serviced the ubiquitous Ford.
