They are carrying a Wajax fire water pump, as well as fire hoses, nozzles, axes, and other needed equipment.

Notes:
The crew also packed up in a similar manner to go out and cut portages and trails for better access to our area forest and lakes. These trails were vital for forest fire prevention.
The Wajax pump can be seen in a current exhibit at the Dorset Heritage Museum.
