The Story:
William " Billy" Elstone (1831-1903) was a lifelong bachelor who farmed on Lake Kashagawigamog. He is best remembered as a trapper, guide, hunter, and fisherman. At various times he served as a fence viewer, road overseer, and militiaman. His usual haunts were in the vicinity of Drag Lake where he pursued his favourite pastimes. He was quite active well into his sixties. A diary of a canoe tripper in the fall of 1892 makes mention of "Old Billy Elstone" who was camped out on the lake awaiting the best of the trolling to come on. The typical mealtime fare consisted of trout, potatoes, bread and tea, all prepared over a fire.
