The Story:
Building on his success, in the early 20th century, Daniel Gorrie vacated his original Haliburton store. He moved into this impressive new brick veneered store and house complex on the South side of Highland Street. His popular trading policies continued, and the business boomed. He ran his operations from here until moving to Toronto around 1913-14. Subsequent owners/tenants of the commercial wing included the Bank of Montreal, Hussey's (later Rae's) Hardware, and Hughes' footwear while Dr. Louis Carroll, the Haliburton School of Fine Arts, and Mike's Milk variously occupied the residential section. The building was demolished in 1978 to build an I.G.A. grocery store, which was replaced in 2002 with the present Foodland.
