After birth, the baby's umbilical cord would need to be tied and cut. The Ziegler Cord Clamp was used to remove any excess fluid from the umbilical cord stump.
This clamp is constructed like a pair of steel pliers with a circular rubber base on the jaws which hold the toothed clamping plate. The stump would be fitted into the small opening and then squeezed between the clamping plate. The clamp could also be used to hold the stump away from the baby's belly temporarily.
