Babies, Babies, Babies! : Rural Maternity and the Red Cross Outpost Nurse
Object Number:
1992.08.49
Object Name:
Basin
Kit Connection:
Cleanliness was a major emphasis of the Outpost Nurse's public health program. Basins like this one were common both in the hospital and in the nurse's kit. Along with a good supply of soap, towels, and brushes, basins were one of the nurse's most important tools.

During delivery, the nurse would ensure that her hands were washed frequently to help prevent the spread of germs. The basin would also be used to rinse cloths and instruments. The small size of this basin (approximately 9.5 inches in diameter) added to its portability and usefulness.
