This is a reprint of a matted studio photograph. On the back of the photo, the woman is identified as Miss Nellie Gilbard, a teacher at S.S. # 9, the Hindon Hill School .
Notes:
Nellie Gilbard was the first teacher at the S.S. No. 9 Stanhope schoolhouse that was built in 1898.

This is the contract between Miss Nellie Gilbard and Stanhope Township as it appears in the Stanhope Township Minute Book 1896-1898.

We the undersigned trustees of S.S. No. 9 Stanhope and Hindon do agree to pay Miss Nellie Gilbard, a qualified teacher, at the rate of sixteen dollars per month if able to teach until the Christmas holidays 1898. The summer holidays we do not pay for. Part of her salary to be paid by the first of July, and the balance when the taxes are collected by the municipal council.

Sign and sealed this 4th day of April 1898.

The Trustees of S.S. No. 9 Stanhope in 1898 were George Armstrong, Charles Wright, and Stephen Dawson.
