S.S. No. 9 Stanhope for the year 1928
Date:
1928
Description:
Attendance register for S.S. No. 9 Stanhope for the school year March to December 1928
Notes:
Mary Truman was the teacher from March 1928 to July 1928, follwed by Vera B. Weeks from August 1928 to December 1928.

There were 11 students registered for school that year, although only the three Crawford children attended in March and April. Five students attended in May, then ten in June. In December, only the Crawford children attended school.

When teacher Mary Truman MacGinnie returned to Minden in 1995 for the grand opening of the schoolhouse at the Museum, she remarked in an article in the MInden Times that:

"In January and February I went to Oshawa to work, and returned on Matrch 1 by sleigh to an attendance of three children. Every morning I broke the track to school for myself and these three children -- ages seven to ten. When we arrived at the school we lit the fire and sat around the stove until we were warm."

The school was closed on March 5th on account of a storm, on June 21 for a picnic, July 9 to 29 for summer holidays, on August 13th for the Loyal Orange Lodge picnic, on September 25 for the local fair, October 4 and 5 for a teachers convention,

Visitors recorded in the register in 1928 included a Mr. Weeks from New Ontario,

The teacher's Record of Events noted that:

On Sept 27th, 1928, Mr. Weeks, a Government representative from New Ontario visited the school. He showed the children pictures of New Ontario and their friends there. Then a picture was taken of the school & pupils who were present.

While the register does not explain why Mr. Weeks was visiting Hindon Hill, it may have been in a bid to attract more families to move to New Ontario.
